Historic Downtown Apartment Building Open For Lease

For anyone who’s ever wanted to live in a historic building in the heart of downtown Grand Rapids, a planned 100-unit building is accepting applications.

Rockford Construction said yesterday that the leasing office for The Morton, a mixed-use development, will open today on the ground floor of the 91-year-old building, at 70 Monroe Center St. NW.

The Morton, a renovation of the historic Morton Hotel, will also feature retail and restaurant space, which is also available for rent today.

Tenants are expected to move into The Morton during the fall of 2015.

Grand Rapids-based Rockford Construction purchased the property in 2011 and is serving as the project’s contractor, while Integrated Architecture in Grand Rapids is the designer.

Model apartment

The newly opened leasing office is visible from the street through a glass storefront and features a full-size living space and kitchen similar to the apartments currently being constructed.

“We are so excited. We had a little sneak-peek party… . A lot of people came through, and we’ve gotten a great response,” said Jennifer Boezwinkle, VP of business development, Rockford Construction. “People are really excited, and I think that’s a sign of how great the potential for this space can be.”

The rate for studio apartments starts at about $950 a month, with one-bedroom apartments starting at about $1,500 a month and two-bedroom apartments starting at about $1,600 a month, said Amanda Sanborn, property manager, Rockford Construction.

Office hours

The Morton leasing office will be open from 11 a.m.-6 p.m., Monday through Saturday, during ArtPrize.

After ArtPrize, the leasing office will be open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

During ArtPrize, The Morton will host SiTE:LAB, which will be located in the building’s basement, first floor and second floor.

“We are excited to be able to showcase how modern apartments will fit into this historic building in the heart of Grand Rapids’ downtown,” said Mike Mraz, vice president of real estate development, Rockford Construction. “The timing to have the space open during ArtPrize allows us an opportunity to show a large-scale audience what the future holds for The Morton.”
