Five Grand Rapids-area high schools are among the top public high schools in the nation, according to the latest report released by Newsweek.

East Grand Rapids, Rockford, Forest Hills Central and Northern and Grand Rapids Public City Middle/High School are included in Newsweek’s top 500 high schools for 2014.

They join 19 additional high schools throughout the state in the rankings.

The ranking is based on six factors: enrollment rates, graduation rates, AP and International Baccalaureate scores, SAT and ACT scores, the change in student enrollment from ninth through 12th grades and the ratio of counselors to students.

Here is how West Michigan schools fared in the ranking:

• East Grand Rapids: Ranked 53 with a college readiness score of 96.3.

• Rockford High School: Ranked 247 with a college readiness score of 83.85.

• Forest Hills Central High School: Ranked 250 with a college readiness score of 83.65.

• Grand Rapids Public City Middle/High School: Ranked 464 with a college readiness score of 69.65.

• Forest Hills Northern High School: Ranked 465 with a college readiness score of 69.59.

In addition to the top 500 list, Newsweek published its traditional Top 10 list and a “Beating the Odds” list, which is a college-readiness ranking that takes students’ socio-economic background into account, according to Newsweek’s website.

“Beating the Odds” ranks 500 schools that perform better than statistically expected for their respective poverty level.

Four Grand Rapids-area high schools are among 26 Michigan schools listed in Newsweek’s beating the odds rankings:

• East Grand Rapids High School: Ranked 125 with a college readiness score of 91.51 and 9.49 percent poverty.

• Grand Rapids City Middle/High School: Ranked 259 with a college readiness score of 82.4 and 35.12 percent poverty.

• Forest Hills Central High School: Ranked 392 with a college readiness score of 73.37 and 9 percent poverty.

• Saugatuck High School: Ranked 401 with a college readiness score of 72.62 and 32.82 percent poverty.
