Gilmore Car Museum – Staycation
I now have a new interest thanks to Gilmore Car Museum! This was my husband’s request for Fathers day, that the whole family get together, and visit the museum.
What a fun time this was……….they not only had more cars on display then I thought were going to be there, but they gave a write up about the car and what was happening in the time period the car was made that influenced that particular car’s body style. I knew woman’s fashions was dictated by the “woman’s movement” however I did not realize how much our environment influenced other types of design. Cars in the 20’s were a type of “fashion” if you will. A sign of status, power and prestige! Very interesting indeed!
I am sure my husband and my daughter’s boyfriend saw something different then I did, but my point being there is something for everyone at this museum.
The grounds were beautiful and well kept. There is a small historic looking diner, where you can buy lunch or you may pack a picnic lunch and sit outside and enjoy the view.
They have many hood ornaments on display. Some were made for the driver of the car, not the maker of the car………let me add, they were not as PC friendly back then!
They had a big selection of the 60’s and 70’s as well. We enjoyed them just as much as we remember driving around in like cars when we were teenagers!
I found out where the term “it’s a duesie” came from. It was from the car Duesenberg. This car was a very fancy and VERY expensive. So after the car was made people would say it is a dousie! Meaning very expensive and impressive!
Also in the 60’s Flip Wilson made the line “here come da judge” famous……..so Pontiac motors named their muscle car the GTO the Judge because of this popular 60's saying. They have one on display!
So while visiting Grand Rapids, Michigan if you have time to take a little road trip.........I encourage everyone to visit this place; I am sure you will have much fun and by accident learn a thing or two!
