Born and raised right in here in Grand Rapids. Successfully graduated from Sherwood Park Elementary School after getting off to a rocky start with the Principal and eventually minoring in playground management.

From there it was on to the very distinguished Iroquois Middle School. A prestigious institution of academics with a heavy emphasis on confrontation management and development of conflict resolution skills.

After a two-year compulsory education there I was released to further my education at the historic Institute of Leadership Development (and Basketball), also known as Ottawa Hills High School. Throughout most of my high school years and for several years after graduation I worked in the family grocery store. A beautiful little super market called the Wolverine Food Mart, which was located on what is now a parking lot for St. Mary's Hospital at the corner of Jefferson and Wealthy.

From there I moved to Chicago to take part in a very traditional Japanese "live-in" student program studying the martial art of Aikido and Zen Meditation. My training there took me all around the world leading Aikido and Police/Military Defensive Tactics seminars in countries like England, Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia, Czech Republic, Bulgaria, and Slovenia. While living in Chicago I also became a civilian contractor for military and law enforcement agencies from around the country teaching defensive tactics. I attended DePaul University studying marketing and finance while in Chicago but my travel and training schedule made it difficult to complete a degree.

I left Chicago in 1994 after almost 4 years of intensive training and travel and headed back to good old Grand Rapids to launch my business career. I started out in the Real Estate sales field working for Westdale BH&G for several years until my almost complete lack of sales skills forced me to re-examine my motivations and jump headlong into studying "how to sell". I went to work, once again, in the new family business of mechanical contracting/heating and cooling. I started out on the air duct cleaning truck and worked my way up through the installation, service, sales, and eventually management departments.

I left the family business again to make it on my own in the mortgage business in 2000. I began originating mortgages and also opened up my own martial arts training facility named the Toyoda Center , located on Division Avenue near 44th street in Wyoming. I spent several years in the mortgage business learning another side of the Real Estate field until a good friend of mine with a very successful Real Estate Appraisal business asked me to come aboard and help him manage and grow his appraisal company. I spent several years there learning the appraisal business and in 2005 I set out to develop my own appraisal firm, the Real Value Group.

Real Value Group now has 3 offices with 7 appraisers serving a fairly large area of Michigan. We focus on what our lender clients have told us are the important aspects of the appraisal business which are great communication, awesome turn times, and world class service to their borrowers.

I'd like to thank Michelle Gordon for the wonderful opportunity to be part of this blog and to contribute to the positive growth of our community.
